E-invoicing obligation – a challenge that brings opportunities
Electronic invoicing is becoming a mandatory standard across Europe in the B2B sector. In Germany, companies must be able to receive and process e-invoices as early as January 1, 2025. From 2027 and 2028 onwards, sending e-invoices will also become mandatory for all businesses. For companies operating across Europe – especially in the e-mobility industry – this can quickly become complex: different countries, varying formats, and diverse deadlines place high demands on invoicing processes.
However, this obligation is not just a challenge – it also presents an opportunity. Companies that start the transition early can digitalize and automate their processes, significantly increasing efficiency, speed, and transparency. With chargecloud, e-mobility companies can take this step with complete peace of mind: together with our trusted e-invoicing experts – such as CapeVision – we ensure that e-invoices are created, sent, and received automatically and in full compliance with legal requirements, all with just a few clicks.
What an e-invoice is – and why it’s more than just a file format
An e-invoice is a structured, machine-readable format that can be processed automatically. Traditional PDFs or paper documents no longer meet the new requirements. The goal of e-invoicing is to fully digitalize the entire invoicing process – from creation and transmission to receipt, posting, and archiving.
The legal foundation is based on the European standard EN 16931 as well as national regulations. As a result, companies are required to issue, transmit, and receive invoices in a valid electronic format. This means that e-invoices must be processed, verified, and archived in a legally compliant and audit-proof manner. At the same time, standardization improves traceability and transparency in financial processes.
Why e-invoicing is especially complex in e-mobility
E-mobility companies often operate across multiple European countries and maintain numerous partnerships, customers, and locations. Each country has its own requirements: different formats, transmission channels, and legal deadlines. This fragmentation makes it difficult for companies to create and process e-invoices in compliance with local laws.
From 2027, large companies with annual revenues exceeding €800,000 will be required to send their invoices electronically. From 2028, this obligation will apply to all companies. Those who prepare early will save time, costs, and effort later on. Continuing to rely on manual or partially automated processes can be risky: serious errors, delays, or compliance violations are not only inconvenient – they can even result in the loss of customers.
The chargecloud solution: seamless and automated e-invoicing
At chargecloud, e-invoicing compliance is already fully integrated into our Operating System (OS). Invoices can be created and sent in accordance with legal requirements – and this functionality is activated for every user in the system with just a few clicks.
All relevant invoice data is generated as a standardized JSON event and automatically transferred to our service partners. CapeVision, for example, handles the transformation of data into the required target formats, validates the invoices, and ensures delivery through the appropriate channels. Whether ZUGFeRD, Peppol, email, or EDI – everything runs automatically and invisibly in the background.
This solution reduces manual effort, minimizes potential errors, and ensures that companies always meet all legal requirements. At the same time, our customers can fully focus on their core business – their charging network and e-mobility operations.
Futureproof e-mobility invoicing
E-invoicing is becoming the standard for B2B transactions across Europe. It is transforming business processes and presenting companies with new organizational and technical challenges. Careful planning and early action are therefore essential. Which departments are affected? Which processes need restructuring? Setting up technical receiving channels, validating data, and ensuring audit-proof archiving are all key components of the upcoming regulations.
At chargecloud, we rely on external expertise: fully integrated into our Operating System, service providers such as CapeVision handle most of the work. Through automation, we ensure that all legal and technical requirements are met and that processes are optimally adapted. This guarantees compliance, efficiency, and transparency at the same time. For our customers, that means more time for their core business – and a secure, fully digital invoicing process.
As an e-mobility company, now is the time to act – and we’re here to take care of it for you.
